Russell Crowe has signed on for his next project, a thriller titled Poker Face. Gary Fleder (Homefront) will direct from a script written by Stephen M. Coates. Arclight Films is financing and producing.
Crowe will play Jake, a tech billionaire who gathers his childhood friends at his Miami estate for what turns into a high stakes game of poker. Those friends have a love/hate relationship with Jake, a master gamesman, and he has concocted an elaborate scheme designed to bring a certain justice to all of them.
However, Jake finds himself re-thinking his strategy when his mansion is overtaken by a dangerous home invader whose previous jobs have all ended in murder and arson.
It sounds a lot like a serious version of Game Night, but considering that film was a pastiche on these kinds of thrillers, Poker Face might be a little late to the party. We’ll see. Fleder has often worked in this genre, having helmed films such as psychological thrillers Kiss The Girls and Don’t Say A Word, and also the surprisingly great Runaway Jury.
Crowe is coming off starring in another thriller, the road rage film Unhinged. Next up he’s got horror-thriller The Georgetown Project due later this year, before he’ll be seen as Zeus in Thor: Love And Thunder.
