Ryan Gosling playing a stuntman? Is this a Drive sequel? Thankfully no, it’s an original film where the two-time Oscar nominee has signed on to play another stuntman, but this time in a drama from Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. Drew Pearce has penned the screenplay.
The project has already been the subject of a heated bidding war, with Universal Pictures winning out ahead of Netflix, MGM, Sony and Lionsgate. Leitch does have a first-look deal at Universal, which naturally gave the studio the edge.
The project is believed to be in the vein of the 1980s TV series The Fall Guy, but it’s unclear how directly. Either way, this project makes total sense for Leitch, who is a former stuntman himself. He and fellow stuntman Chad Stahelski teamed up to co-direct John Wick, which saw their filmmaking careers take off, with Leitch going on to direct movies like the aforementioned Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde.
Despite little being known about the film, this project should quickly get cinephiles’ hearts racing. Gosling has very often picked good projects and good directors, and him teaming with a former stuntman in Leitch should give us a unique insight into that dangerous profession.
Where Gosling will fit this project into his schedule is anyone’s guess, though. He’s currently set to star opposite Chris Evans in The Gray Man for Netflix, a Wolfman movie from Leigh Whannell, and an astronaut movie from Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Leitch himself is currently prepping for Bullet Train, an action movie in the works at Sony that will star Brad Pitt.
