Legendary has secured an all-star cast for Animal Friends, a comedy set to be a hybrid of live-action and animation.
Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Vince Vaughn, and Aubrey Plaza will star in the film, which stems from a script by writing duo Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. Peter Atencio (The Machine, Keanu) will direct.
The movie is being described as an R-rated road trip adventure, but that’s about all we know right now. The idea for the film reportedly came from a general meeting between Burrows & Mider and Patrick Gooing, an executive at Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort. Visual effects and animation will be provided by DNEG.
All four stars are well-versed in comedy, so this has the potential to be plenty of fun. Reynolds is actually about to shoot two more comedies; Deadpool 3 begins production this summer, while he’s also on board to star in Paramount’s Boy Band.
Momoa has some big releases due, as he’ll next be seen in DC sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, before having roles in Fast and Furious sequel Fast X and the Minecraft movie. He’s also got his own comedy lined up – Killer Vacation, which also stars John Cena.
Vaughn recently wrapped production on Bad Monkey, a new Apple series from Ted Lasso and Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence.
He’s got indie drama Easy’s Waltz from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto lined up, which also stars Al Pacino, Michelle Monaghan, and Simon Rex.
Plaza had a great 2022, starring in the excellent Emily the Criminal and stealing the show in season two of The White Lotus. She recently wrapped production on Francis Ford Coppola‘s sci-fi epic Megalopolis, and is currently shooting a role in Disney+’s Marvel series Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
Burrows and Mider recently had their heist comedy spec script The Pick Up set up at Amazon, with Eddie Murphy eyeing to star and Tim Story attached to direct. They also previously teamed to write Netflix’s teen comedy The Package.
