Per Deadline, Scarlett Johansson has signed on to play the lead in Kristin Scott Thomas‘ feature directorial debut, a drama titled My Mother’s Wedding. Thomas has also written the script alongside John Micklethwait, and Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham and Freida Pinto will also feature in the film.
The film will be based on Elizabeth Jane Howard‘s 1959 novel, which focuses on a famous London playwright and his sickly and embittered wife, who have never fully buried the memory of their deceased daughter. The pair’s rocky marriage takes an unexpected turn when they travel to a remote Greek island.
Thomas had previously planned to make her feature behind-the-camera debut in 2017 with The Sea Change, which she would have also starred in. She had Mark Strong and Anya Taylor-Joy attached to co-star, and a script by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (She Said), but the film never got made. With Johansson attached, she shouldn’t have that problem this time around.
While Johansson is probably best known for her role as Black Widow in the MCU, she’s always been adept at these sort of small dramas. Her recent pair of Oscar nominations for the similar Marriage Story, as well as Jojo Rabbit, prove that. Thomas herself is no stranger to this sort of character-driven film either, having earned an Oscar nom herself for The English Patient in 1997.
With these two collaborating, My Mother’s Wedding should have plenty of interesting characters to dig into. The film is currently in pre-production.
Johansson will next be seen in Wes Anderson‘s Asteroid City, Apple film Project Artemis alongside MCU pal Chris Evans, and Sebastián Lelio‘s drama Bride.
Thomas currently stars in Apple series Slow Horses alongside Gary Oldman, while she has film projects such as Rupert Everett‘s Lost And Found In Paris and Jane Anderson‘s historical drama Women In The Castle lined up.
