John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, co-writers of Horrible Bosses and Spider-Man: Homecoming, are developing a one-hour sci-fi drama currently titled Proxy for Fox.
The show will focus on a new technology that allows online followers to live voyeuristically through the experiences of hedonistic young ‘proxies’ on an island paradise, not dissimilar to 2009’s critically maligned Gamer.
Fox has ordered a script with a penalty attached. Daley created the series and will write and executive produce alongside Goldstein, who will also write the show if the project moves forward. What exactly defines ‘moving forward’? Who knows.
Alongside writing some hit films, the duo made their directorial debut in 2015 with Vacation, a reimagining of the National Lampoon film with Ed Helms taking over the role of Rusty Griswold. Their second directorial effort, another comedy titled Game Night, will arrive in March 2018 and stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.
Proxy will look to tap in to the increasing erosion of privacy within the online world as well as the danger of exploitation and has a premise that has plenty of promise. For a duo thus far well versed in more comedy-centric scripts, this will be a step into the unknown.
