Sydney duo (Johann Willenberg and Marcus Ng), Secret Spade, offer “Gallows”, the first track off their upcoming self-titled EP, due for independent release in February. Apparently the song is about addiction, especially substance abuse. Perhaps the gallows is the self-imposed death of addiction? Clever title choice.
“Gallows” is very laidback and ethereal, the thump of bass drum like a heartbeat. There is an undercurrent of tragedy, though. Aspects, going from high to low, are maybe akin to a comedown or bad trip. The fadeout rings out. Is this the petering out of the addict, either walking dead or overdosed dead?
