Shailene Woodley‘s career blossomed thanks to roles in The Fault In Our Stars and the Divergent series. But since wrapping up the YA franchise, she’s attempted a move into more adult fare. Roles in films such as Snowden and the critically acclaimed HBO series Big Little Lies have helped, but now she’s set for her darkest role yet.
Woodley will star in the serial killer thriller Misanthrope, per Variety. The film revolves around a talented but troubled cop recruited by the FBI to help profile and hunt a murderer.
Damián Szifron (Wild Tales) will direct. The film is based on his original idea, and he has penned the screenplay alongside Jonathan Wakeham. Filming will take place in Atlanta later this year, and the casting of additional roles is already under way.
“Screenplays like Misanthrope, that are this well executed both in theme and tone, are rare to come by with a director like Damian behind the wheel”, Woodley said. “I have complete trust we will create something that will have a profound impact on cinema and will resonate with audiences, especially given the times we are living in right now. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this team”.
Szifron added: “Misanthrope will deliver the kind of cinematic experience that made me a filmmaker and I can’t wait to share it with audiences all over the world”.
FilmNation Entertainment will be presenting the film to buyers at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Woodley will next be seen in the second season of Big Little Lies. It premieres on HBO on Sunday, June 9. On the film side of things, she just wrapped on an independent film titled No No No, Yes. It is expected to arrive sometime in the second half of 2019
