Netflix has reportedly landed the rights to spec script Below after a competitive bidding war. The streamer won the rights to Greg Weidman and Geoff Tock‘s script thanks to an offer in the low seven-figure range, and have quickly tapped David F. Sandberg (Shazam!) to direct the film.
Plot details about the project are under wraps, but we do know it’s a genre thriller of some sorts. James Wan and Michael Clear will produce Below through their Atomic Monster banner, which will reunite Wan and Sandberg, after the former discovered the latter and produced his debut horror film, Lights Out.
Sandberg went on to helm Annabelle: Creation before landing the Shazam! gig.
That film was relatively successful and well-liked, and he’s currently in post-production on a sequel – Shazam! Fury Of The Gods – which will see Zachary Levi reprise his lead role. Helen Mirren and Rachel Zegler have also joined the cast. Sandberg is also circling an adaptation of graphic novel The Unsound.
Weidman and Tock previously collaborated with Netflix on Jim Mickle‘s sci-fi thriller In The Shadow Of The Moon. They most recently produced Star Trek: Section 31 for CBS All Access.
