Shiva Baby was one of the festival and indie darlings of 2021, an equally hilarious and uncomfortable experience of watching a bisexual Jewish woman attend an awkward shiva with her parents. It’s no surprise that director Emma Seligman has found her follow-up project – a high school sex comedy titled Bottoms.
The film will see Seligman re-team with her Shiva Baby star Rachel Sennott, but the film also boasts an eclectic cast that includes Ayo Edebiri (Big Mouth), Marshawn Lynch (the Seattle Seahawks), Havana Rose Liu (No Exit), Kaia Gerber (American Horror Story), and Punkie Johnson (Love Life).
Seligman and Sennott have written the script, which will follow two unpopular queer girls in their senior year of high school who start a fight club to try to impress and hook up with cheerleaders. The film is being developed for MGM’s Orion Pictures, while Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman and Alison Small will produce for Brownstone Productions.
Seligman, who is just 26, has already shown to have a masterful handling of awkward tension and comedy, which should fit perfectly in a high school comedy. She and Sennott have also already shown us what a good team they make, and along with a fun supporting cast, Bottoms should have every chance to rewrite the teen sex comedy for a new generation.
Seligman is also working on a HBO TV adaptation of Shiva Baby titled Sugar. Sennott will next be seen in A24 slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies and Ally Pankiw‘s indie drama Brooke & Sam.
Bottoms is just the latest project in development at Orion Pictures, whose upcoming slate also includes Billy Porter‘s directorial debut Anything’s Possible, the adaptation of Miriam Toews‘ novel Women Talking with Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, and Claire Foy, and Chinonye Chukwu‘s Till starring Danielle Deadwyler, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jalyn Hall.
Production on Bottoms is currently scheduled to begin this spring.
