With the Cornetto Trilogy in the bank, it’s sometimes hard to recall that even before their collaboration with director Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were collaborating together on TV series, Spaced.
Despite its relatively short lived existence, the show has now grown a huge cult following, and for the first time since their ascension into cinema, Pegg and Frost are looking to get back in the TV game. The two have formed a new Sony-backed production studio, Stolen Picture, and are aiming to co-create a horror-comedy series.
The show is to be titled Truth Seekers, and is described as a half-hour horror/comedy series following a three person team of paranormal investigators, with each instalment set to “focus on a paranormal incident, a setup with clear monster-of-the-week potential”.
Pegg said of the project:
“Each episode is going to be an adventure, a potential haunting or something. It’ll start as a very parochial idea, a very small business venture for these people, but it will expand as the series goes on to be something far more global. It’s a language everyone understands, the mystery of the unknown.
Shaun of the Dead was a very parochial story set in North London and somehow it managed to get this global reach because everyone understands the language of zombie movies”.
Pegg and Frost are the latest creators to make the jump from cinema to the small screen as networks and streaming giants battling for supremacy have opened up huge opportunities for creators to get whatever ideas they want off the ground. While it’s not yet clear whether either of the duo will actually appear in the series, they’ll at least have a hand in creating it.
Reportedly, the search for a network or streaming service has already begun, and one would imagine they’ll be eagerly queueing up with bags of money to get the rights to the project.
