St. Vincent and Carrie Brownstein premiered their film The Nowhere Inn at Sundance Film Festival back in 2020, but now they have just revealed its first trailer publicly. The movie will be given a cinematic release on September 17, but will also land on Apple TV.
The collaborative project was co-written and produced by the two musicians, who also play fictionalized versions of themselves in the film. It was directed by Bill Benz. It also stars Dakota Johnson in her own character.
The Nowhere Inn was first announced back in April 2019, just after the two musicians worked together on a series of mock interview segments in promotion of St. Vincent’s 2017 album, Masseduction.
On May 18, St. Vincent shared on her social media “Me and my bestie made a bananas art film… it was supposed to be a music doc but somewhere along the way, things went terribly wrong”
The two friends wanted to make a documentary “to capture a glimpse of the ‘real Annie’ behind the superstar songwriter St. Vincent” and about her music, touring life but also her on-stage persona. It is “a story about two friends who attempt to wrestle the truth out of a complex subject before the hall of mirrors that is their artistic lives devours them completely.”
In the trailer, we can see Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) speaking directly to the camera alternating with scenes where she is on the road in support of Masseduction.
St. Vincent’s new album was just released last week and Carrie Brownstein’s band, Sleater-Kinney has just announced that their new album set to be released in June.
