Things are going well for Steven Yeun. Having recently landed an Oscar nomination for his lead role in the critically acclaimed Minari, the former Walking Dead actor is now reportedly in negotiations to join Jordan Peele‘s next film, per Deadline.
Peele is writing and directing the currently untitled film at Universal, and also producing alongside Ian Cooper for his Monkeypaw Productions banner. Keke Palmer signed on to star in the project last month, and Peele’s Get Out Star (and Yeun’s fellow Oscar nominee this year) Daniel Kaluuya is also in talks for the film.
Plot details are totally under wraps right now, as they usually are with Peele films, so we don’t know who Yeun is negotiations to play. All we do know is that this film is a part of Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions five-year deal with Universal, and that the film is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on July 22, 2022.
Both Get Out and Us were original smash hits for Universal, so Peele has basically got carte blanche to make whatever he wants. It’s no surprise that big names want to work with him, and if Yeun does indeed sign on, this will be the latest in a string of prestige projects he’s signed on for.
After leaving The Walking Dead in 2016, he starred in Korean arthouse hit Burning before signing on to Minari. He’s also got a supporting role in upcoming drama The Humans, and recently signed on to star alongside Ali Wong in A24’s new comedy series Beef, which Netflix recently acquired in a heated bidding war.
We’ll wait for more news regarding the latest Peele project, but don’t expect to hear much in the way of concrete plot details until we get way closer to July 2022.
