A few weeks ago it was announced that Taika Waititi would be returning to the MCU to direct the fourth Thor instalment. With his latest project, WWII satire Jojo Rabbit, hitting cinemas soon, expectations were that his return to Asgard would be his next film. However, that isn’t the case. Waititi reportedly has a secret project in development at Fox Searchlight that he’ll squeeze in before Thor: Love And Thunder.
Producer Garrett Basch reportedly approached Waititi about writing and directed this unknown project, and once he agreed, Fox Searchlight jumped at the chance to distribute it. Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish are also on board as producers. However plot details are being kept thoroughly under wraps. We do know that the film already has a greenlight to star shooting this autumn.
Waititi came from nowhere with the films What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt For The Wilderpeople. Jojo Rabbit is getting early praise and is being lined up as an awards contender. Considering those films, and the others he’s made outside of the MCU machine, this secret project is likely a similarly small, quirky film.
Waititi’s decision to helm Thor: Love And Thunder did mean that his planned Akira remake was scrapped. It’s possible that this secret project is something similar to that. When some films fail to get off the ground, you’ll often see directors undertake a similar project.
Examples include David Fincher leaving The Black Dahlia and directing Zodiac instead. Perhaps that’s the case here with Waititi and Akira.
We’ll wait and see. We do know that Thor: Love And Thunder sees the return of Natalie Portman, joining MCU regulars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. That film is due to begin filming March 2020 in Australia.
