Award season is all the rage right now, and on February 18, the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) took centre stage, with one particular film leaving as the big winner this year. That film is titled Rocks, a London based film supported by and starring young women from London, it was directed by Sarah Gavron
The film got five different prizes at the BIFA including ‘Best British Independent Film’, so I guess massive congratulations are in order! One of the stars from the film, Kosar Ali took home two prizes herself, ‘Best Supporting Actress’ as well as ‘Most Promising Newcomer’.
The film features unknown – until now – women that all come from secondary schools around the British capital. The story around the film is about a young girl, played by Bukky Bakray, who has to take care of her little brother Emmanuel, played by D’angelou Osei Kissiedu, after their mother just takes off one morning.
To try and do her best with her new responsibilities, she goes to her friends for help, with her most loyal friend Sumaya, played by Kosar Ali. The rest of the film is full of hope and friendship, as well as having a meaningful message behind all of it.
The film has generally been well-received by critics and really showed the potential of these young actresses. Other stars of the film that took home awards at the BIFA ceremony which was virtual for health and safety reasons, also included D’Angelou Osei Kissiedu for ‘Best Supporting Actor’.
