Origin movies here, origin movies there – it’s a reality that we now have to face. Next in motion is everyone’s favourite comic book villain, the Joker. The Batman spinoff movie is in its early stages, but already has a series of big names attached.
The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips will direct the film, a step away from his usual comedic tone. Phillips will also co-write the script with Scott Silver (8 Mile). Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island) will produce the film with Phillips.
The Joker has been seen in a multitude of films, and portrayed by an array of actors; Cesar Romero in the 1960s Batman television series, Jack Nicholson in Batman (1989), Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (2008), and Jared Leto in Suicide Squad (2016). Heath Ledger undoubtedly remains the most acclaimed, posthumously awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role.
Jared Leto, who has provided the most recent portrayal, is set to reprise the role in the Suicide Squad sequel and Harley Quinn spinoff. He will not, however, play the lead in the Joker standalone. A new actor, likely younger, will tackle the challenge.
The projected film will take place in early 80s Gotham City, and tell a gritty, hardened story of how the Joker game to be. The Joker’s origins have long been a mystery, subjected to conspiracy theories and compilations. With the upcoming film, will we finally be able to see how he got those scars?
