A few days before the theatrical release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, producer Amy Pascal has stated that British actor Tom Holland will continue to play the famous Spider-Man for a least one of three more upcoming films.
“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel — [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie”, she said. She also added that “we are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel, it just isn’t part of… we’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies”.
For the time being, no deal has been made, nor is a sequel being written yet, but Sony insists that they have a strong relationship with the actor and that the studios would like to see that collaboration continue.
The producer’s comments are the latest twist in the partnership between Sony and Marvel over Spider-Man. Indeed, Marvel has given the film rights to Spider-Man to Sony for almost 20 years. But after the unpromising results of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony and Marvel unveiled a new partnership that will see Spider-Man appear on screen in films such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.
However, in 2019, shortly after the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, a new deal was struck between the two studios, jeopardizing the future of Spider-Man. After much negotiation, protests from fans and Tom Holland, the two studios have reached an agreement.
The only mystery that remains concerns the appearance of Spider-Man in Sony’s cinematic universe, which includes Venom. But given the end scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, we can only think of a strong possibility.
