20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for upcoming thriller, Red Sparrow. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence as former ballerina Dominika Egorova, forced to retire due to injury, who is forced to join a secret intelligence service that turns ordinary people into unforgiving killers.
Once her basic training is complete, she runs into American CIA agent Joel Edgerton, who questions her employer’s methods and tries to convince Dominika he’s the only one she can trust. She then must decide if she’s truly a “sparrow” or not, while everything she ever held dear is put at risk.
The trailer looks brutal enough, but there are certainly similarities to last year’s Atomic Blonde that can’t be ignored, leaving one to wonder whether this will just be another by-the-numbers assassin origin story. Lawrence looks as always to be a dynamic presence though – despite the odd Russian accent – and hopefully this trailer is just a tease for a deeper, more complex film.
The film re-teams Lawrence with her Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence, and alongside her and Edgerton stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeremy Irons. The film opens in cinemas on Friday, March 3.
