Pierpaolo Piccioli showed the Valentino fall/winter 2023–2024 collection for Paris Fashion Week within the luxurious Salomon de Rothschild hotel, with the tie serving as the showpiece accessory.
Since Pierpaolo Piccioli took the lead at Valentino in 2016 as the sole creative director, he’s more than shown he’s a master of spectacular dresses and red carpet-worthy formalwear.
For this edition, black tie becomes the collection’s iconic representation and appears frequently in both men’s and women’s apparel. It changes by being tied, untied, or incorporated into a shirt, dress, or jacket when paired with androgynous skirts and Valentino Rockstud designs, which give ensembles a rock-and-roll vibe.
Playing with the expression “Black Tie” which indicates the formal evening dresscode, Pierpaolo Piccioli had fun throughout the show, and via the omnipresence of black ties, deconstructing a normative use of clothing to make it an element of individual freedom.
Worn by women, the symbols of rigid masculine tailoring were freed from their connection to patriarchal authority. This message of defiance of ingrained societal norms was backed by a garment composed entirely of red bow ties. Archetypal male tailoring and public school uniforms were drastically de-dramatized by the silhouettes, which were frequently short and supported by towering black boots.
