A Deadly Adoption starring Will Ferrell (Anchorman) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) is a parody of the Lifetime Movie genre with the tagline: ‘The birth of a plan gone wrong’.
Lifetime movies are a guilty pleasure, the tabloid style drama reels you in despite the melodramatic acting, contrived plot and obvious ending. Lifetime have actually made some pretty decent features of late, such as Flowers in the Attic (2014) and this year’s Whitney – the biopic starring Angela Basset. Now cleverly cementing its turnaround from the trash movies we’ve known and loved, they are poking fun at themselves with A Deadly Adoption, attracting more A list film stars and declaring their self made genre a thing of the past.
The story follows happy couple, Ferrell and Wiig who live in an isolated yet picturesque cabin with their cherubic young daughter, enter Jessica Lownds (Beverly Hills 90210) into their home, an innocent seeming young pregnant woman, looking for adoptive parents for her unborn child. This is the film’s synopsis: “Inspired by a true story, ‘A Deadly Adoption’ is a high-stakes dramatic thriller about a successful couple, who house and care for a pregnant woman during the final months of her pregnancy with the hopes of adopting her unborn child“.
Ferrell and Wiig play it completely deadpan in this trailer, only the nuance of mischief in their eyes. It is everything you would expect from a traditional trailer for a lifetime movie with ‘High stakes drama’… only the weirdness of seeing our favorite comedy faces in the roles of the hapless characters. The movie was directed by Lifetime veteran Rachel Lee Goldberg and written by Andrew Steele (The Spoils of Babylon).
Ferrell recently faked us out over the movie’s existence after the story was leaked: “We are deeply disappointed that our planned top secret project was made public, Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forego the project entirely”. His prank sets the tone for this farcical pastiche perfectly! Watch the trailer here.
