You thought naming the Wreck-It Ralph sequel would be easy? No, instead Disney have settled upon an oddly convoluted title, Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.
I’d bet that most people will simply ignore the phrase to the colon, which begs the question why have it there in the first place? I assume Disney thinks cramming the word ‘internet’ in the title somewhere might make the film appeal to a broader section of its audience?
It’s an overly complicated title, sure, fortunately the film has a high chance of being good considering what a pleasant surprise the first film was. John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch and Jack McBrayer return all as the film is set to tackle internet culture; an intriguing choice considering how quickly and outdated things become. Ever watch a film where MySpace is referenced as a relevant thing? It dates the film quickly.
Co-director Rich Moore said: “To take these characters we love and have them enter the enormous world of the internet has given us so much to explore. Our production team has been hard at work designing a world that takes something we all think we know – the internet – but shows it in a whole new, imaginative way”.
While co-director Phil Johnston added: “We’re so excited to be working with Ralph, Vanellope von Schweetz, Fix-It Felix and Sergeant Calhoun again, and we have new characters we look forward to unveiling. At the center of this film, as in the first one, is the relationship between Ralph and Vanellope, two once-outcasts, who in each other, found true friendship”.
Despite the convoluted title and interesting narrative choice, the characters and adventure drive the world of animation forward so it’s no stretch to think that Moore and Johnston can bring us another film filled to the brim with fun and humour.
Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 opens on March 9, 2018.
