He may not have won any Oscars personally last night, but things are still looking good for Yorgos Lanthimos. With his film The Favourite being a critical hit, it’s no surprise to learn he’s already got his next project lined up. The Greek filmmaker will next helm the “twisted” crime thriller Pop. 1280.
The film is an adaptation of the Jim Thompson novel, who also wrote The Killer Inside Me. The book focuses on Sheriff Nick Corey, a corrupt cop with a nasty sense of humour. He has an impossible appetite for indulgence, and uses his knack for bringing out the worst in people to manipulate those around him into ensuring he wins the next election.
Lanthimos will write, direct and produce for Imperative Entertainment. A story focusing on institutional corruption sounds very timely right about now, even though the book was originally published in 1964.
The synopsis above sounds like something right Lanthimos’ alley, with its manipulative protagonist and dark comedy elements. Attention will quickly turn to who will be getting the role of Nick Corey, which is clearly one any actor would love to sink their teeth into.
