Disney are wasting no time with moving the Star Wars franchise onwards. Now that The Force Awakens is out and well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film of all-time (it’s already in the top 3), they are shifting focus onto the next project in line: an anthology film named Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Disney have a few other anthology films planned, including a young Han Solo film, rumoured to take place 10 years before the events of A New Hope.
However, it has now been suggested that Han Solo may be making an appearance in Rogue One. The search for a new Han Solo has not been easy (fillings Harrison Ford‘s shoes was never going to be) but the large number of possibles has been cut down to a small group of contenders. Names mentioned as forerunners are Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood and Logan Lerman.
The clock is ticking and directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord have been told to make a decision in the next couple of weeks, meaning that there would be time for the young scoundrel to make an appearance in Rogue One before its December 16 release. Rogue One is the first in what has become known as the Anthology series for Star Wars, a companion series to the sequel trilogy which will tell stories separate (but not entirely unrelated) to the events in the previous films.
Disney hopes it will be a financially lucrative way to both expand the Star Wars universe and transition the franchise to a yearly title. If this was a video game series, fans would be screaming internally. Rogue One starts where an anthology series must: at the beginning. The plot will follow the mission of a small band of rebels to steal the plans of the first Death Star, thereby setting up the action of the original Star Wars film of 1977.
It will star Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelson, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna and Forest Whitaker. As soon as we know who’s playing Han Solo, we can probably add their name to the cast too.
