Zack Snyder‘s collaboration with Netflix is set to continue. After the recent release of Army Of The Dead, the filmmaker is heading back to the streaming giant for another project, this one a sci-fi fantasy titled Rebel Moon.
THR reports that the movie is inspired by Star Wars and the films of Akira Kurosawa.
The story focuses on a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrant named Belisarius. Desperate to survive, the colony dispatches a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.
Snyder is co-writing the script with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, who he previously collaborated with on 300 and Army Of The Dead, respectively. Interestingly, Rebel Moon actually originated as a Star Wars pitch, but it didn’t come to fruition. It was then rejigged into a series idea, before the writers realised the story worked better in the form of a feature film.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out”, Snyder told THR. “Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing, and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized”.
It’s no surprise that a film inspired by Star Wars is already being touted for its franchise possibilities. Army Of The Dead was only modestly received, but it still led to Netflix developing a German-language prequel and a anime series based on the film. The tantalizing possibility of a big franchise will always keep big streamers interested in this sort of project.
With this announcement, the release of Army Of The Dead, and the unveiling of The Snyder Cut of Justice League on HBO Max, Snyder is having a pretty good year. Expect to hear plenty of news about Rebel Moon in the coming months, as it gears up to begin production in early 2022.
