Electronic musician Zhu has teamed up with Tame Impala to release new gentle banger “My Life“.
The single differs noticeably from Zhu’s previous beat-heavy collaborations with the likes of Skrillex, Kaskade and AlunaGeorge. Instead, “My Life” is a chilled out and ambient track that is rounded out nicely with vocals from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker.
It’s coming up to five years since Steven Zhu first put a face to the music by revealing his real name and Chinese-American identity.
His manager Jake Udell told Billboard in 2014 that part of the motivation behind choosing to initially release Zhu’s work anonymously was due to concerns about prejudice.
“Some of us don’t even know the limitations of our own prejudice. Rather than put those limitations to the test, [we] created an engaging way for fans to focus on the music rather than who’s behind it.”
Since choosing to divulge his real name, Zhu has gone from strength to strength in the electronic scene and has become a crowd favourite of the festival circuit. You can catch him this June at Field Day at Brockwell Park.
