As expected, not long following the release of the first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer, a number of fan theories have been circulating around the web.

Perhaps the most popular however is the possibility that protagonist Jyn Erso is in fact the mother new trilogy hero Rey. Of course this has riled up a lot of fans, sparking questions and probable answers in regards to how the character was conceived. However, Daisy Ridley has herself debunked these rumors as mere speculation.

“I’m not being funny, you guys, but just because she’s white and got brown hair… it doesn’t mean she’s my mum”, the actress explained while speaking at the MTV movie awards. Ridley also implied that she knows who Rey’s parents are, but it apparently bears very little significance to the story. “I think the amazing thing about it is that Finn and Rey don’t come from anywhere and they find a place”.

It’s pretty clear that she’s actually joking here though, since the weight of her origins is what makes the upcoming films far more intriguing. Seeing as George Lucas initially intended the series to be a space soap about the Skywalker family, it seems like the new series has continued to extend this sentiment well.

As for Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), she has also gathered particular interest from fans aswell. Really drawing upon the power of a female lead, we might actually see Star Wars go through a new and unique direction.
