Oh, reality drama how it drives the ratings mad. The executive abdication and subsequent departure of the former Miss Great Britain Zara Holland from ITV2’s Love Island provided a ratings boost for the show, for the first time beating Channel 5’s Big Brother.

Family illness was the reason for Miss Holland’s sudden departure, the former beauty queen citing her mother being ill for her leaving the show. This boosted the shows ratings to 1.13 million, 5.1% of the audience and pipping Big Brother to the post with 1.07 million viewers.

ITV commented on Holland’s departure: “Owing to an illness in the family, Zara Holland has left the Love Island villa to return to the UK. Our thoughts are with her and her family and we send all of our best wishes.
