Marvel Is Planning A ‘Black Widow’ Standalone Movie | Film News

Black Widow 1

Could it finally be happening? If we are to believe the words coming out of Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige mouth, well yes there is hope. The Marvel universe is currently on a roll, with Captain America: Civil War soaring at the box office and earning rave reviews from critics and movie-goers alike.

While the Marvel universe has always fared very well with fans and critics, most people will agree that there is still a lot of room for improvement. When it comes to powerful female characters, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has been pulling all the weight – and she has done an amazing job. But now it seems that the tides are finally turning.

Marvel has two female-driven films on the horizon, first out is Ant-Man and the Wasp which will showcase Evangeline Lilly’s fully formed superhero the Wasp. Then we have Captain Marvel to look forward to, where Ronda Rousey is currently the front runner for Miss Marvel – which would be awesome.

These are exciting projects, and ones to look forward to. But many, myself included, are still holding out for a Black Widow standalone movie. Natasha Romanoff is a deeply intriguing character with a mysterious past, one that is often alluded to but never expanded on. So it would be extremely interesting and fun to learn more about her, and give Scarlett a meatier project.

While there have been rumours and campaigns launched, nothing has come of it. Considering that Black Widow has an enormous fan base, and that Scarlett Johansson is a very bankable actress, one would think that a solo film would be a no-brainer. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo expressed interest in a Black Widow solo film earlier this year, saying;

“We find that the character is one of the richest if not the richest character in the Marvel universe. A very complex character, haunted by demons and her understanding of the world is fascinating. I think there is a lot that can be done with that character”.

Now it seems that the big bosses at Marvel are on-board too, announcing that they are “creatively and emotionally” committed to Black Widow. In response to a question about which characters would be getting standalone movies, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige told Deadline,

We’ve announced the next nine movies, 10 counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow”. Feige revealed.

“We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise”. Yes! Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this happens, and that it doesn’t get derailed. For more Black Widow, you better head to your local cinema and watch Captain America: Civil War if you haven’t already. You are in for a treat.
