Antonio Banderas – whose previous roles include masked hero, Zorro, and Shrek’s sidekick, Puss in Boots – will now turn his hand to playing fashion icon, Gianni Versace.
Banderas surprised the fashion world by enrolling in world-famous college Central Saint Martins last year in order to study menswear design. The actor told daytime TV show Loose Women: “Central Saint Martins is probably one of the best schools in the world and so I am going to start studying with them. It makes me feel actually very young to put [my] elbows on the table again and try to understand another reality”.
Although details on the film are minimal at the moment, it is known that the film will be directed by Billie August, winner of a Palme d’Or, Academy Award and Golden Globe.
There has been controversy surrounding the film however, with the Italian fashion group telling Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) that it “has neither authorised nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace. The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction”.
