Triple Frontier just can’t catch a break. After gestating for years, with Kathryn Bigelow at one point attached to direct, the film finally seemed to be moving forward after tapping J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) to direct, and snapping up Tom Hardy, Channing Tatum and recent Academy Award recipient, Mahershala Ali, to star.
Well, if you’ve been excitedly waiting for this film for as long as it’s been in production, prepare to be disappointed once again.
Hardy and Tatum have exited the project, but that’s not all. Production as a whole has now stalled indefinitely. Two, perhaps three, issues seemed to have caused this. One, the budget was far too high. With the three aforementioned actors already signed on, and two other main roles still needing to be filled, the budget was reaching exorbitant levels.
Hardy and Tatum also reportedly had issues with the latest version of the script, written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker), and are now planning to fill their slots with new projects.
The other issues is that a regime change at Paramount, where former chairman Brad Grey – a noted passionate backer of the film – was replaced by Jim Gianopulos, who is reportedly less enthused about the project.
Adria Arjona had been tapped to play the female lead, with Bigelow remaining as an executive producer, but once again it looks like Triple Frontier has stalled. The story would have been set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where it’s tough to monitor and organised crime is rampant. For now, no solution is forthcoming.
