Don’t call it a remake! The first trailer has debuted for Flatliners, a ‘modern reimagining’ of the 1990 film of the same name. The original film starred Kiefer Sutherland (set to appearing in this version, too), Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts and was a modest success.
The original film and this one follows a group of med students who attempt to find out what lies beyond death by experimenting with near-death experiences. Michael Douglas, who produced both the 1990 film and this one, commented on the differences between the two films:
“We viewed the original movie as a jumping-off point – and are now telling a re-imagined story with new characters. We have learned more and more about the world, and science keeps answering so many questions and taking us to so many previously unexplored places – but still no one knows what happens after we die. That’s a question we’ll be asking ourselves forever”.
The film might turn out to be something worthwhile, but the clip above might as well be the blueprint for how the modern trailer is prone to revealing far too much, almost holding the viewers hand through the plot points of the film months before it’s released.
A remake (sorry, ‘modern reimagining’) of Flatliners is far from a bad idea – updating a early 90s sci-fi story with the modern technology at our disposal makes sense – and hopefully it can at least offer some intrigue and not just be a cash-grab rehash of Joel Schumacher‘s original film.
The film stars Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna and James Norton, and is directed by Niels Arden Oplev (the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Mr. Robot).
Flatliners arrives in cinemas Friday, September 29.
