First Trailer For Winston Churchill Biopic ‘Darkest Hour’ | Film Trailer

The first trailer has arrived for the other Winston Churchill film of 2017, Darkest Hour. The first film, simply titled Churchill and starring Brian Cox as the former Prime Minister, was released in early June and focused on Churchill’s actions in the lead up to D-Day.

Arguably, Darkest Hour is the more high profile of the two films, starring a near unrecognisable Gary Oldman in the lead role. This film begins on the eve of World War II and chronicles Churchill’s push for England to stand up to Nazi Germany rather than negotiate a treaty.

The trailer is below:

The film is directed by Joe Wright, who has already found a niche with historical, theatrical dramas such as Atonement and Anna Karenina. While the film likely won’t conjure up anything revolutionary plot wise, it looks to be far more aesthetically pleasing than its counterpart from this year.

Naturally, Oldman and his thus far sole Oscar nomination in his career (for Best Supporting actor for Tinker Tailor Solider Spy) will get a large focus here, as he looks to have completely immersed himself in the role and will naturally be the focal point of the whole film. Perhaps he’ll finally get his due if the film turns out well.

Darkest Hour also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup and Ben Mendelsohn. The film arrives in select US cinemas on Wednesday, November 22, and UK cinemas in early January.
