Milla Jovovich is in final talks to play the villain, the titular Blood Queen, in the Hellboy reboot: Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen. Jovovich has been the protagonist in the long running Resident Evil franchise for six instalments which recently came to an end, and now she’s set to switch allegiances to the evil side in Neil Marshall‘s reboot.
David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Ian McShane have already been cast as Hellboy and Professor Bloom respectively, while the film is being written by comics creator Mike Mingola, Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden.
It’s an excellent piece of casting. Jovovich has long been flying the flag for female action heroes in her role as Alice in Resident Evil, and she’s certainly at home within a dark, sci-fi/fantasy world, so seeing her change tune and take on the role of the Blood Queen has the potential for something great.
Comic book adaptations often live or die on their villain, and with Jovovich on board the Hellboy reboot is off to as good of a start as it could have hoped for, considering it’s got to follow two rather well received incarnations of the character by Guillermo Del Toro.
The project, first announced in May, has already moved very fast and while it doesn’t yet have a release date, it could be looking at coming out somewhere in late 2018 if the pieces fall right. If not, 2019 will be the first time we get to feast our eyes on this new version of Hellboy.
