Having already secured David Tennant and Michael Sheen, the miniseries adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens has added another star. Jon Hamm has been cast in the series, to play the role of archangel Gabriel.
Tennant and Sheen are set to play Crowley and Aziraphale, respectively, a demon and angel who join forces to prevent the end of days. Gabriel’s role was small in the original book but Gaiman says it’s been expanded for the TV series, as it had been when the book was originally set to be adapted into a film.
The book, which has been called unfilmable in the past, was at one point set to be made as a movie with Terry Gilliam directing and Johnny Depp and Robin Williams in the lead roles, but the project fell through thanks to lack of financing. Fortunately, once Gaiman announced in 2016 he was writing scripts for a six-part miniseries, Amazon stepped in and announced it was producing the show.
Gaiman spoke about the casting of Hamm and the role of Gabriel within the show:
“He is everything that Aziraphale isn’t. He’s tall, good-looking, charismatic and impeccably dressed. We were fortunate that Jon Hamm was available, given that he is already all of these things without even having to act”.
So, great signs, or perhaps good omens, for a show that can now boast a bevy of big name TV actors, and also has Jack Whitehall, Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson and Adria Arjona in its cast.
Gaiman is currently in the middle of a hot period for his work, with American Gods proving to be a big hit, too. He’s also attempting to bring his Sandman graphic novel to TV screens as well. Strike while the iron is hot, Neil.
