Following the allegations made by actor Adam Rapp that Kevin Spacey attempted to sexually assault him in 1986, Netflix announced that House Of Cards would end after its upcoming sixth season. Despite the surefire controversy of that season itself, the streaming giant is reportedly planning to go the Game Of Thrones route, and develop spinoffs for the popular show.
Reportedly, active development has already begun on a number of potential spinoff ideas. A prominent one has executive producer Eric Roth continuing the story of Michael Kelly‘s Doug Stamper, while Variety reports “at least two other spinoff ideas are also being explored, though writers have not yet been attached to all of them”.
Reportedly, Netflix had decided to end the show after the sixth season months ago, but naturally decided to push forward the announcement following the allegations made against Spacey. Netflix were reportedly “deeply troubled” by the news, and have made sure executives have met with the cast and crew to “ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported”. Spacey is not currently on set.
Netflix are reportedly following the same Game Of Thrones model that develops multiple spinoff possibilities at once. The question is, will fans want to return to the House Of Cards world sans one, or both, Underwoods? And how will the now very uncomfortable sixth season even work?
