The first trailer has arrived for the upcoming western starring Christian Bale, Hostiles. Yes, the odd western does still come around once in a while, ostensibly hoping to be as good as Clint Eastwood‘s Unforgiven and usher in a similar, short-lived western renaissance.
Despite the presence of Bale, Hostiles doesn’t quite have the talent to be that influential. The film is directed by Scott Cooper (Black Mass, Out Of The Furnace), a director who has excelled at making barely above average films thus far in his career. Hopefully this can be his breakout hit, but we’ll believe it when we see it.

The synopsis for the film is as follows:
“Set in 1892, Hostiles tells the story of a legendary Army Captain, who after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to tribal lands.
Making the harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico, to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow, whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape, hostile Comanche and vicious outliers that they encounter along the way”.
Alongside Bale, the film stars Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, Ben Foster, Jesse Plemons and Timothée Chalamet. It is set to have a limited US release on Friday, December 22 before getting a wide release in January 2018.
