Season one of Netflix’s serial killer drama Mindhunter seemed to fly under the radar slightly, but it was an engrossing, fascinating examination of psychopathy and obsession to those that watched it. Season two is gearing up to begin production, and one of the major questions from fans was whether David Fincher would return to direct some episodes?
Fincher was a major part of the first season, helming four episodes and helping create the show. With co-creator Joe Penhall leaving the series after the first season, it makes Fincher’s involvement even more important. Fortunately, he’s coming back, and bringing some other directing talent with him.
The second season of Mindhunter will reportedly only be eight episodes as opposed to ten, but Fincher will be directing the first and last ones of the season. Joining Fincher are Andrew Dominik (The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford), who will direct two episodes, and Carl Franklin (Devil In A Blue Dress), who will direct four.
Dominik fits the tone of the show perfectly which his penchant for visceral films, and Franklin has recently become a TV staple, helming shows such as The Leftovers and 13 Reasons Why, and Fincher hand selected him to handle the majority of season two.
The series is based on the experiences of FBI profiler John E. Douglas and charts the early days of the FBI’s criminal profiling unit in the 1970s, specifically focusing on the new phenomenon of serial killers.
Fincher is currently in Pittsburgh doing prep on the new season, which begins filming at the end of the month. In addition to directing two episodes, he will spearhead the reshoots already built into the schedule, much like he did in season one.
Despite a lesser episode workload, production is expected to run long, and should take up most of Fincher’s time in 2018. That reportedly has pushed back his proposed re-team with Brad Pitt, World War Z 2, but reportedly plenty of work still needs to be done on that script anyway.
It’s looking like it’ll be a long time until we see a new Fincher film, but at least we have Mindhunter to consume in the meantime. Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for the second season, but it’s expected to arrive sometime in early 2019.
