‘Fast & Furious 9’ Gets A New Screenwriter | Film News

Universal has tapped Kin screenwriter Daniel Casey to pen Fast & Furious 9, making him the first new screenwriter to join the franchise in over a decade. Up until now, Chris Morgan has written every instalment of the franchise since 2006’s The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift. Morgan has done a great job elevating the series to the billion-dollar franchise it is now.

If this seems like a blow to the franchise, don’t be too worried, as Morgan is still sticking around. He will write the screenplay for the upcoming Hobbes And Shaw spinoff, which focuses on the fan-favourite characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, respectively. David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2) is scheduled to direct the film.

In addition to sci-fi drama Kin, Casey has also penned the script for The Heavy, a film described as a subversive superhero movie. It was reportedly that script that got him this gig. He also re-wrote 10 Cloverfield Lane from the original non-Cloverfield script.

The ninth instalment of the franchise has taken a bit of a back seat with the big spinoff coming first, which has riled a few of the main cast members. But Justin Lin, who previously directed four films in the series, including Fast Five, is set to return for Fast & Furious 9 (as well as Fast & Furious 10, too). Vin Diesel is set to star and the film is set to hit cinemas in April 2020.
