Universal has released the long-awaited first trailer for Halloween. Although sharing the name of the original 1978 film, this is a sequel that ignores all the subsequent films that spawned from John Carpenter‘s horror classic and sees icon Michael Myers return to terrorise the residents of Haddonfield once more.
This film picks up forty years after the events of the first movie, with Myers having been institutionalised all that time and Laurie Strode – having been haunted by the memories of that fateful night – determined to kill him if (or, more likely, when) he finally escapes and sets his sights on her once more.
The trailer above is pretty much everything one could hope for from a Halloween sequel. The iconic mask is back, there looks to be some expertly crafted scares, having Jamie Lee Curtis return is terrific, and the clip even gets in some sly jabs at the sequels it’s ignoring.
After films where Myers has been Laurie’s brother, or a supernatural force, he now looks to be back to what Carpenter originally intended: The Shape.
David Gordon Green (Stronger) is directing from a script he co-wrote with Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley, which is exciting in and of itself. Throw in a cast that also contains Judy Greer as Laurie’s daughter, Andi Matichak as her granddaughter, plus Will Patton, Dylan Arnold, and the return of Nick Castle (the original ‘Shape’), and this sequel is shaping up to be something special.
It’s hard to remember a contemporary horror film with close relations to a classic slasher being this hyped. Hopefully it delivers when it arrives, naturally, on Friday, October 19.
