Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for their upcoming historical epic, Outlaw King, which stars Chris Pine and reunites him with his Hell Or High Water director, David Mackenzie.
Based on a true story, Pine stars as Robert the Bruce, a man who transformed from defeated nobleman to outlaw hero during Edward I‘s occupation of medieval Scotland. He recruits an army, claims the Scottish crown, and vows to vanquish his homeland from the tyranny of the English.
The historical epic is not the big-budget blockbuster it once was in the years post-Gladiator in the early 2000s, but we saw what Mackenzie could do with a similar grittiness and open landscapes in Hell Or High Water. That was a contemporary setting, so it will be interesting to see how he adapts that style to a historical film such as this.
Mackenzie himself is Scottish, so the film should also be close to him. While Netflix Original Films have taken a bit of a beating over the past year outside of a few well-received comedies, perhaps Outlaw King is the film to give them some credibility back.
The film has also been written by Mackenzie, and alongside Pine stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, and Billy Howle. The film will arrive on Netflix, and also appear in select theatres, on Friday, November 9.
