Viggo Mortensen To Make Directorial Debut With ‘Falling’ | Film News

Two-time Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen is heading behind the camera to make his directorial debut. He will direct, write, and star in Falling, a film being billed as an “intimate drama about a son’s relationship with his ageing father”.

Mortensen will star alongside Lance Henriksen (Aliens) in a story which follows John Petersen, who lives with his partner Eric and their adopted daughter Monica in Southern California. His father (Henriksen) is a farmer from a previous era with antiquated ideas regarding his son’s lifestyle.

When the father comes to stay with John and his family for an indefinite period of time while looking for place to retire, these two very different worlds collide.

HanWay Films will handle international distribution of the film, and HanWay managing director Gabrielle Stewart said of the film:

“The industry has always regarded Viggo as a really soulful artist. He is a talented photographer, poet, and musician. His screenplay for Falling is a powerful, well-observed family drama. We are thrilled to be part of his promising and exciting directorial debut”.

Mortensen has brought on board acclaimed cinematographer Marcel Zyskind (The Two Faces Of January) and award-winning production designer Carol Spier (having previously worked with her multiple times on films such as Eastern Promises and A History Of Violence) for his debut. The film currently doesn’t have a scheduled production start date but is expected to begin soon.
