Grammy Award winner Janelle Monáe and her production company Wondaland Pictures have inked a first look deal with Universal. They will reportedly focus on projects that champion underrepresented voices and new perspectives.
Having previously landed roles in the Best Picture-nominated films Moonlight and Hidden Figures, this pact will continue Monáe’s working relationship with Universal as she seeks to expand her acting career.
Not only is she fresh off six Grammy nominations for her critically acclaimed third studio album, Dirty Computer, she has roles lined up in big films such as Welcome To Marwen alongside Steve Carell, Focus Features’ Harriet Tubman biopic, Harriet, as well as a voice role in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Lady And The Tramp.
“There is an exciting, artistic revolution taking place in our industry, and Janelle and the talented team at Wondaland are at the forefront”, said Universal chairman Donna Langley in a statement. “Their forward-thinking, inclusive approach to content and storytelling make them a perfect fit for our studio”.
