The pieces are beginning to fall into place for Disney‘s own streaming platform, Disney+. Having announced the Diego Luna-led Star Wars prequel series that will focus on his character Cassian Andor from Rogue One, Lucasfilm has now announced that it has recruited The Americans writer and producer Stephen Schiff to be the showrunner for the series.
Schiff joined The Americans at the beginning of season 2 and remained on the show for five years through the season finale as it grew into one of the most acclaimed series on television. He earned two best drama Emmy nominations as a member of the producing team. As a writer, he has also written films such as Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
Disney announced the Cassian Andor series in November, and it will follow the adventures of the rebel spy during the formative years of the rebellion prior to the events of Rogue One. It will “explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire”, and production is set to begin next year.
“Going back to the ‘Star Wars’ universe is very special for me”, Luna said when the series was announced. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply”.
The series, currently untitled, is the second Star Wars-based series Disney has announced for their streaming service, after Jon Favreau‘s The Mandalorian, which will tell the story of a warrior from a race of bounty hunters that gave us Boba Fett, and is set to star Pedro Pascal and Nick Nolte. No release date has been set for either series.
