Jac Schaeffer, writer of the upcoming Captain Marvel as well as the standalone Black Widow movie, has been tapped by Disney and Marvel to serve as showrunner for Vision And Scarlet Witch, which will be one of the major shows on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform, Disney+.
The show will follow Elizabeth Olsen‘s Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany‘s Vision, who both debuted in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, striking up a romance that lasted through last year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Schaeffer will pen the pilot episode too, as well as act as executive producer.
A Scarlet Witch series was originally proposed back in September, 2018 as Disney began an aggressive strategy to match the scope of Netflix by stacking their platform with content.
There’s also a Loki series in the works with Tom Hiddleston reprising his role, a Winter Soldier/Falcon two-hander with Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, plus Star Wars-related series including a Rogue One prequel and Jon Favreau‘s The Mandalorian.
Having Olsen and Bettany on board is a huge coup that will separate these shows from the Marvel TV universe that Netflix recently cancelled, likely in response to Disney’s plans. The only potential issue could be superhero/Star Wars fatigue, but Disney likely isn’t worried about that yet.
We’re yet to experience what Schaeffer can do in the superhero genre, but we’ll get a chance to when Captain Marvel hits cinemas on Friday, March 8. Disney+ is currently expected to launch in late 2019.
