TV channels have it tough nowadays, having to compete with streaming giants like Netflix who seemingly have unlimited funds and do not have to deal with things like showtimes and ad breaks. In their quest to stay afloat, most channels pump out content in the hope that something sticks. FX, though, are going in the opposite direction.
Known for giving their creators the time they need to create, the American network has delayed the third season of one of their most popular shows, Atlanta. FX CEO John Landgraf said that Donald Glover‘s show won’t be returning in time to be considered for the 2019 Emmy Awards, whose deadline is May 31, 2019.
He noted that the writer’s room is back breaking stories, but the delay is because Glover is a busy man as both an actor and a musician.
“Donald Glover is sort of the king of all media, and he just has had an incredibly complicated life”, Landgraf said. “He’s had personal things he’s had to deal with, from injuries to other things I’d rather not say publicly that just have to do with not with his personal life but his extended family”.
So while Atlanta is merely delayed, the next season of American Crime Story is totally up in the air. As FX prepares for Ryan Murphy to leave for his mega-deal at Netflix, they are mulling over “3 to 4 ideas” of how to follow up The Assassination of Gianni Versace, but we do know that it will not be a season on Hurricane Katrina, as was previously in the works.
Originally that idea – based on Douglas Brinkley‘s book The Great Deluge – was to be the second season of American Crime Story, after The People vs. O.J. Simpson, but was replaced by the Versace series, with Emmy Award-winning results. Then things began to look very bleak when stars Dennis Quaid, Annette Bening, and Matthew Broderick all left the project.
It’s unclear what ideas are being wrestled with right now for that show, and the case is the same for another Murphy show, Feud. Originally that was going to follow up the season on the tempestuous relationship between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford with a season revolving around Prince Charles and Diana Spencer, but that is no longer happening.
Reportedly, the next season of Feud will proceed when Murphy “gets inspired by something”. FX might be feeling a little concerned that he’s only feeling inspired by the tens of millions of dollars he will be getting from his Netflix deal soon enough.
