Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman has signed on to join the cast of Spike Lee‘s upcoming film, Da 5 Bloods. Delroy Lindo and Jean Reno are also on board on what will be Lee’s follow up to BlacKkKlansman, which finally earned him his first Oscar nomination for Best Director.
Netflix is producing the film, with Lee has written alongside his BlacKkKlansman co-writer, Kevin Willmott. It has gone through many variations over the years. Lee and Willmott’s version is based on an original screenplay by Danny Bilson and Paul DeMeo, as well as a rewrite by Matthew Billingsly.
The plot revolves around a group of Vietnam veterans who return to the jungle in an attempt to put their broken selves back together. The film is being described as a “story about the redemption of one’s soul”.
Lee deservedly got a Best Director nomination from the Academy for his latest film. After years making films away from the mainstream, BlacKkKlansman looks to have catapulted him back into the cultural conversation. Netflix producing Da 5 Bloods should mean that remains the case.
Boseman is also tangentially in the Oscar conversation this year, as Black Panther has a shot at winning many awards, including Best Picture. His next project is the action thriller 17 Bridges, which hits cinemas Friday, July 12.
