Cillian Murphy, per THR, has signed on to join the cast of the sequel to A Quiet Place. He’ll join Emily Blunt, who is reprising her role from the first film, and the film will be written and directed by John Krasinski, Blunt’s husband.
This is a spoiler alert, but the sequel was missing a male lead after Krasinski’s character was dramatically killed in the first film. Murphy will reportedly play “a man with mysterious intentions who joins the family unit”. This obviously raises a lot of intriguing questions, and it’ll be interesting to see what the sequel focuses on now that we know the basic rules of this new, silent future.
Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are also returning as Blunt’s children, and production is slated to begin this summer. Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, and Michael Bay are once again producing.
Having created a hit that went on to gross $340 million from just a mere $17 million budget, it’s worth wondering whether the sequel will now have a bigger budget, and thus a larger scope, and whether that’s even a good thing. The inherent intrigue of the original film was its mystery, and with that now gone, the sequel will have to work hard to scare us again.
Krasinski is also writing the sequel himself, alone, after penning the first film alongside Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Maybe that, alongside the caché and freedom the success of the first film should give him, allows him the opportunity to create a worthy, unique follow-up.
