Canadian artist Shawn Mendes has released his new single “If I Can’t Have You“, fresh with a stunning artsy black and white video.
We follow the singer in a studio where he sits in front of a backdrop screen on a couch. The camera twists when he moves to a piano, then to a bed, then to a vocal booth, evoking the idea of locking himself in a studio space overnight to record the song. The singer shows off his great physique during the ‘sexy’ music video and we love it!
The song’s lyrics talk about the singer’s obsession with someone that he can’t have over an upbeat melody. The singer croons “I can’t write one song that’s not about you/Can’t drink without thinking about you”.
Via YouTube Live Chat, Shawn Mendes responded to fans questions concerning his new single. The singer was heavily inspired by The 1975 for the new song.
“Truthfully, my inspiration behind the song musically was from The 1975!” He describes his new song as a “confident pop record” and went on to say that “This is the one that consistently every time I play it for myself, or for friends and family, it has just given people that smile.”
Shawn Mendes will perform the song of the first time on Saturday Night Live on May 4, marking his second appearance on the show.
