Following his attention-grabbing, critically acclaimed two releases last year “Worth” and “Fantasy” underlining the breadth of his appeal, rising London R&B star Kwaku Asante follows on with another quietly powerful study on moving on from a bad chapter in life with a his new double release “Say Goodbye” and “A Piece of Mine”.
Both “Say Goodbye” and “A Piece of Mine” are uniquely different pieces but demonstrate Kwaku’s creative flair. “Say Goodbye” displays finesse and sheer funk innovation. It’s sultry in a inconspicuously jazzy way and his rich, deep vocals fit the production like a glove. Reminiscent of early De La Soul in the instrumental.
“A Piece of Mine”, in contrast, is peaceful and naturally more stripped back and deeply personal. You hear the yearning and emotion in his vocal performance. He gives so much on this beautiful B-side. Both tracks balance each other and set the tone for another pivotal year.
Having finished 2018 supporting Jay Prince at his London O’Meara show, and with support already coming from the likes of Tom Misch and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM, it’s evident that Asante is a name not to sleep on. With a refined combination of vocal talent and innovative, melodic style, the young London artist seems on a clear, exciting trajectory.
