ITV has commissioned a “chilling and suspenseful” new series from Luther creator Neil Cross, based on his novel Burial.
Because the Night is a four-part story revolving around a murder, and according to ITV, “perhaps some ghosts”. The story is centred around “well-meaning but directionless” Nathan, who has a terrible secret he’s tried to keep hidden and worked hard to recompense. Nearly a decade into his new life, everything changes with the arrival of Bob, an unwelcome figure from his past.
Bob shows up on his doorstep with some shocking news that leads to a series of “catastrophic decisions” which cleverly drive a “tense and compelling narrative” of psychological suspense, dread, love and possible redemption.
Cross said: “It’s one of my favourite stories: a tale of psychological suspense, of guilt and ghosts and murder. Oh, and love. Always love. Our job is to make viewers want to sleep with the lights on. We’re looking forward to it”. ITV has not yet announced any cast members or a broadcast date.
Luther was a huge hit with audiences and its fifth series aired on BBC One earlier this year. However, it doesn’t look like another series is in the works according to actor Idris Elba, who previously told Radio Times, “I don’t think we’re going to do too many TV versions of it.” Nevertheless, fans might see John Luther on the big screen one day.
“We’ve got a skeleton of an idea for a film,” Elba added. “And I’m not allowed to say too much but I can say that this season has the film very much in its sights. If there is a film, then it will be somehow connected to this season.”
