Robert De Niro will soon be seen in his highly-anticipated re-team with Martin Scorsese in The Irishman. However, as excitement builds for the film’s world premiere at the New York Film Festival in September, another Scorsese-De Niro collaboration is in the works.
De Niro is reportedly in negotiations to join Leonardo DiCaprio in another Scorsese project, Killers Of The Flower Moon. Based on David Grann‘s non-fiction novel of the same name, the book recounts the story of multiple murders of the Osage Indian tribe in 1920s Oklahoma that occurred after they discovered oil on their lands.
A deal for De Niro to join the film is reportedly very close. Scheduling and final budget-related matters are just being sorted out. Assuming everything goes to plan, the film will move into production by the middle of next year.
This should obviously be very exciting news for any film fan. We’re just getting DiCaprio’s first movie since his 2017 Oscar win in Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and the latest Scorsese/De Niro collaboration is happening on Netflix, of all places.
Considering DiCaprio and De Niro have been Scorsese’s two cinematic muses in his career, the chance to see them share the screen in a film of his is very enticing.
It’s also good news that Scorsese continues to get projects greenlit. Because of The Irishman‘s budget, the only studio that would finance the film was Netflix. There was a worry that those type of auteur-driven original projects were going instinct at traditional studios, but it looks as if Scorsese is still going strong.
The Irishman opens the New York Film Festival on Friday, September 27. It hits Netflix later this year, probably in December. A concrete release date has not yet been confirmed.
